Apple iPhone 14 Pro in Peel slim case. Will the next iPhones double their storage levels?
The August 11 update is below. This post was originally published on August 8, 2023.
Apple’s next iPhone line-up, the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max, is just around the corner (though that could be another name for the latter). Want to know when exactly the iPhones will be introduced and available for sale? Read all the details here.
Two new reports claim that it will be a huge upgrade in upcoming phones for storage, an essential element in any phone.
Up to 2TB Storage for iPhone 15 Pro
First off, according to Korean blogger yeux1122, the Apple iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models will have a larger storage option. Courtesy of Apple Translate, “This is supplier source. Apple iPhone 15 Pro and Max models will have this time a new 2 tera option. The blogger’s emphasis may be on the fact that a 2TB iPhone was predicted before but never materialized. Available storage levels for iPhone are 128GB, 256GB and 512GB for all models plus 1TB for Pro iPhones only.
If the report is correct, there will be an extra tier of 2TB capacity. If that seems excessive, it might not be. Extra storage can be important because even though most of our digital lives are stored in the cloud (like iCloud), we increasingly need storage on phones themselves.
Some iPhone features require higher storage levels, such as ProRes video recording in 4K resolution at 30 frames per second. With iPhone 14 Pro, you need 256GB or higher storage. Models with 128GB of entry-level storage can only shoot ProRes at 1080P resolution at 30 frames per second.
Apple iPhone 15Pro. How much storage is enough?
Storage Can Start From 256GB
And then there’s the second report spotted by MacRumors. A Weibo account also claims that the top end of the 15 Pro series will have a capacity of 2TB. But the report makes a second claim, which means: “Compared to the maximum storage, I’m hoping to start with 256GB instead of 128GB. The price has gone up as a result,” he said.
This means storage levels for Pro iPhones will be 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. There is no reference to what will happen with the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.
How Convincing Are These Rumors?
The Weibo account confuses the storage estimate with a separate rumor of a price increase. While it’s nice to justify something negative (a higher price) with a benefit, there’s no guarantee that this is the case. And if the Pro series starts at 256GB but the regular series stays at 128GB, 256GB and 512GB, that means another level of differentiation between the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro.
What makes 2TB less likely for me is that Apple wants some outstanding financial sets in the coming months, and a high-end model with a teardrop price that 2TB can manage may not be the impression Apple wants to make. with now. The 1TB iPhone 14 Pro Max currently costs $1,599; Would Apple charge more for 2TB capacity?
However, the time has passed for the transition to 256GB of entry-level storage for the iPhone (and certainly iPhone Pro handsets).
With thinner bezels around the screen, camera upgrades, better repairability and new display technology, there are already significant improvements anticipated for this year. There may be a lot of changes coming to life on or near September 12 before we move into Game Mode, with new eye-catching colors for the iPhone 15 Pro and other colors for the iPhone 15.
August 10 update. iPhone 15 series memory, this time there was another leak related to RAM instead of storage. According to this unknownz21As a prolific source of leaks, more details are now available about the processor that will power the next iPhone Pro models, namely the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max (assuming it’s not called the iPhone 15 Ultra as some have suggested).
Hidden among the technical features of the new chip, called A17, is the detail that the new phones will have built-in 6GB of RAM. This is the same A16 Bionic found on the iPhone 14 Pro and expected to come to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. There have been rumors that Apple will bump up to 8GB of RAM for later models, and the leaker says they’ve only seen 6GB so far, and 8GB is “unlikely” but may not be impossible. They also don’t rule out the possibility that it’s a “newer revision that I don’t know about”. I might add that the response to this leak in X was a huge and pervasive disappointment that 8GB of RAM didn’t seem to be included.
However, Apple will have calculated exactly how much RAM is needed and will install it, I suggest. Pro models are the most expensive iPhones Apple has ever produced, and the last thing they want is complaints of slow performance.
On the other hand, this chip is said to be built on the 3nm manufacturing process, which in itself promises strong efficiency gains and performance capabilities. Or increases in battery life that are always welcome.
Other details in the tweet refer to the 6 CPU and 6 GPU cores compared to the A16 Bionic with 6CPU and 5GPU cores. The maximum clock speed is also quoted and 3.70 GHz is higher than the 3.46 GHz found on the iPhone 14 Pro. The leak also confirms that the 3nm process is used and will be manufactured by TSMC.
August 11 update. The plot thickens. The leaker, who said on August 9 that the iPhone 15 Pro will have 6GB of RAM, not 8GB as some predicted and supported by many, says things are a little more complicated now.
Now, unknownz21 He tweeted that configurations for the A17 Bionic chip were “at some point” being tested with both 6GB and 8GB of RAM. And the possibility of 8GB of RAM, which was dismissed as unlikely a few hours ago, may not be deleted after all. The tweet says: It looks like both 8GB and 6GB RAM configurations were being tested for the A17 at one point, it’s unclear at this time why or which one was chosen as final – it may be storage dependent.
This is interesting and may even coincide with the suggestion that the next iPhone will come with a 2TB storage variant. The leaker was asked if this scenario was similar to what happened with the iPad Pro, i.e. models with larger storage levels of 1TB and 2TB had higher RAM levels (16GB), and those with lower storage capacity had 8GB. DATA STORAGE. The answer was, “I think that would be a possible explanation, yes.”
In this case, it seems possible that exactly the same principle applies, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models with 1TB and 2TB internal storage can benefit from higher RAM levels.
When asked if there are 6GB in the 15 Pro and 8GB in the 15 Pro Max, he replied, “No, I don’t think so; 8GB was also tested on the 15 Pro.”
And finally, in their last comment, things look much more promising for those who want a higher level of RAM. “So 8GB of RAM is possible this year?” When asked, the answer was “Yes”.
Unknownz21 doesn’t actually change its views on what’s going to happen, but what was suddenly considered unlikely but not impossible now seems to have gained a greater likelihood. It didn’t take us long to find out for sure, but this could be really good news.
