CHENGDU, August 7 (Xinhua) — Collecting four golds in men’s and women’s singles and doubles at the 31st FISU World University Games, Chinese shuttlecocks dominated the nine-day badminton events.
China led the medal tally with four gold, three silver and one bronze, followed by Chinese Taipei with 2-1-2 and Thailand with 0-1-2.
In the men’s singles final, 21-year-old Chinese Wang Zhengxing ignited the deafening cheers from the audience as he won the gold medal by beating his Thai opponent 2-0 (21-16, 21-14) overwhelmingly.
“Thanks to my coaches for the help they provided. They have always guided me during the games and that has helped me learn a lot,” Wang said at the post-match press conference.
Top-ranked Han Yue defeated South Korean Kim Ga-ram in straight sets (21-9, 21-13) to win the women’s singles gold medal. world number 18 Zhang Yiman is in the semi-finals.
“I put all my strength into the final and prepared for all possible challenges, including losing a match or a set,” Han said.
“It’s a great honor for me to participate in the University Games while I’m still in college. I see it as a valuable experience,” said the 24-year-old student at Tongji University in China.
Han said he will now prepare himself for the World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark this year.
China’s Li Wenmei/Liu Xuanxuan nationals defeated Xia Yuting/Du Yue 2-1 (18-21, 21-19, 21-14) in the women’s doubles final, while Ren Xiangyu/Tan Qiang beat Zhou Haodong/He Jiting 2-0 he won. (23-21, 21-16) all Chinese men’s doubles final. ■
