How to create custom Modes and Routines on a Samsung device?

Samsung’s One UI software has seen many changes over the years and by 2023 it has become one of the best Android skins on the market. It has a long list of features that can make your life easier, but did you know you can do it? Want to automate many system functions to make your phone work for you? That’s right, using Samsung’s Modes and Routines feature you can automate a number of system functions and have your phone play by your own rules.

Introduced with One UI version 5.1, Samsung’s Mods and Routines are actually an extension of Bixby Routines that we have had for a while. However, these features have nothing to do with Bixby and are customizable so you can take advantage of them without having to activate Samsung’s notorious assistant. I’ve been using mods and routines on Samsung phones since they came out and they are very easy to create and customize. If you’re new to the world of Samsung phones and wondering how to get the most out of your devices, here’s everything you need to know about Modes and Routines on Samsung devices, including guides to get you started. Creating Mods on Samsung Galaxy phones

Mods on Samsung phones can be used to tweak a number of system settings or toggle several at once by activating a particular mode. For example, enabling “Sleep” mode can be customized to enable DND, enable grayscale and Eye comfort shield, and even toggle Power saving. You can customize these presets or add more to ensure the correct settings are triggered when you activate a particular mode. This eliminates the need to search for different settings and edit a bunch of them separately, especially if you use them repeatedly on a daily basis.

One thing I like about mods is that they can be triggered automatically by time, location or when some current conditions are met. For example, my custom “Work” mode is scheduled to air at 10:30 on weekdays and automatically triggers a set of settings on my Galaxy S23 when the time condition is met. In addition, when the mode ends at 19.00, it reverts all settings, so the device returns to its normal state without my intervention. Here is how you can customize or create mods on your Samsung Galaxy phone:

1. Open Settings and tap Modes and Routines.
2. make sure you choose modes bottom option.
3. Tap any preset mode and Beginning button.
4. If you’re activating the mod for the first time, you’ll be able to customize the settings or see an “On” button if you want to activate it right now regardless of the preset conditions.

Alternatively, you can create an entirely new mode with your own parameters for an event not listed by default. Here’s a step-by-step guide detailing how I created a custom “Work” mode for my Galaxy S23:

1. scroll down to find add mod option on the Modes and Routines page.
2. Enter the mod name, customize its icon and color, and Complete to take action.
3. On the next page add the conditions to trigger or change while the mod is active and select the settings.
4. I set my work mode to activate and end at 10:00 and 19:00 respectively on weekdays.
5. It has DND enabled automatically, but allows calls from certain contacts and notifications from WhatsApp.
6. The mod is also set to restrict apps, reduce all media sounds and ringtones, and enable Grayscale.

This is just one of many custom mods I’ve created on my Galaxy S23, so feel free to explore different preset mods or create one from scratch based on your activities. Creating custom modes allows your phone to automatically trigger certain system settings and functions that you would normally enable manually every day. It will save you a lot of time and effort so you can do everything you do without having to fiddle with your phone.

Creating Routines on Samsung Galaxy phones

Routines in One UI 5.1, formerly known as Bixby Routines, is Samsung’s approach to third-party IFTTT (If This Then That). This special feature allows you to automate actions by setting trigger conditions. For example, the Streaming video routine is triggered when you open YouTube or any other media app. It automatically enables Wi-Fi, toggles Dolby Atmos, and even enables DND to ensure notifications don’t get in your way while watching videos. You can also trigger a routine when one of the mods you created in the above step is activated. Here’s how to use the default routines on Samsung Galaxy phones.

1. Open Settings and tap Modes and Routines.
2. make sure you choose routines bottom option.
3. shoot me To discover top button (indicated by a compass icon) to check all default routines.

4. choose All routines Press the button and choose the one you like.
5. Press save button at the bottom after reviewing the conditions and actions.

If you don’t like the default routines, you can also create your own using the step highlighted below. I’ll show you how I use an app that automatically launches the Sony Headphones app when I connect my WF-1000XM4 earbuds.

1. Follow the first two steps above to enter. routines page.
2. shoot me + Click the icon at the top to see a new page that will allow you to add a trigger condition and a corresponding action.
3. In this case I set it to trigger when I connect a Bluetooth device, which is the WF-1000XM4 earbuds.
4. The corresponding action is set to open Sony’s Headphones app, which allows me to toggle the Ambient Sound Control.

I’ve created a few more to automate a bunch of daily routines and they’ve been really useful so far.

That’s how easy it is to customize or create Modes and Routines on a Samsung Galaxy device. It’s easily among the most underrated Samsung features, as I haven’t seen many Samsung users take advantage of it.
