Liverpool’s transfer window has suddenly turned into a whirlwind of action as the 2023/24 Premier League campaign is upon us once again.
Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai were signed by sporting director Jorg Schmadtke during the pre-season, and Jurgen Klopp sought to design a remake.
Notable revelations have ensured that Moises Caicedo is ready to join the Reds via Chelsea and reconnect with former Brighton & Hove Albion teammate Mac Allister, and while this is resounding news for the Anfield side, the defense still needs to be sharpened.
As such, Klopp may be inclined to act on the mutters this summer and move forward with a move for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.
What is the latest status of Marc Guehi at Liverpool?
The 23-year-old has been on Liverpool’s radar and has been linked multiple times lately, but will likely dominate a £50m ballpark fee, The Athletic reports.
Right-footed, this isn’t ideal considering Klopp is looking for a left wing defender, but he can play either side of the back line and could be a tribute to the solidity and determination of the Liverpool defence.
How good is Marc Guehi?
Schmadtke left his job midway this summer after Liverpool failed to qualify for the Champions League this year, but the club is making moves to instantly return to top-notch continental competition.
But after scoring 47 goals last season and only 26 goals in the 2021/22 campaign – when Manchester City boosted the Reds to the Premier League title – it’s clear that a new addition could be worthwhile.
Guehi could be that man; Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate form Liverpool’s first defensive duo and every player is available, but Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have been questioned all too often lately for their poor defensive performances.
With the Cameroonian defender entering the final year of his contract and “Branding” Guehi could be replaced by this second name, Matip.wretched” by CBS reporter Nico Cantor.
Meanwhile, Guehi said, “absolute tankHe made 82 appearances for the Eagles by goalkeeper and former England U21 teammate Josef Bursik and after signing £18m from Chelsea in 2021.
Having averaged 41 games in his two campaigns at Selhurst Park, Guehi is not ruthless in his defensive outputs, but an astute reader of the game; With a calculated gaze, he examines the flow of the match and uses his prime position to eliminate the danger before he can definitely throw the ball forward.
According to FBref, the four-hatted star is among the top 19% of defenders in Europe’s top five leagues for successful shots per 90; speed and power.
He also averaged 6.94 Sofascore match points last season, impressed with his composure, completing 85% of his passes, 3.6 passes per game and an impressive 68% of ground duels.
The £50,000 a week titan would mimic the Matip’s forward driving nature; it’s something the 32-year-old confidently does and is among the top 1% of their positional peers for progressive moves per 90.
It will also provide some renewed enthusiasm and maybe, just maybe, revive Klopp’s back line and provide the extra gear needed to bring the machine back to life and bring the club to glorious success once again.
